January

  • The Devil and Daniel Johnston, 2005. Made me cry cry cry like a baby, especially the parts with his father. Though, I have a beef with the modern portrayal of Johnston. All his recent interviews show him to be very clear-headed, but the only recent footage of him in this film are of him acting goofy, making him seem crazier than ever.

June

  • Girls Rock, 2008. Good story, but the film could have been done better.
  • Boogie Nights, 1997. This film has basically zero likable characters.

July

  • Jaws, 1975. Richard Dreyfuss makes this movie.
  • Fargo, 1996. A quietly funny and frightening movie. Reminiscent of other Coen films like No Country For Old Men and Barton Fink.
  • Fight Club, 1999. The blindingly obvious plot is just a vessel for ultraviolence.
  • Urban Cowboy, 1980. Interesting to watch from a feminist perspective.
  • Lolita, 1963. I don’t remember the book being this hilarious. Sue Lyon, who plays Lolita, is perfectly cast.

August

  • Bottle Rocket, 1996. Starts slow and has a bit of an identity crisis before the love story aspect takes hold. I liked the second half. Love the Wilson Brothers.
  • Adaptation, 2002. Adore this movie with all of my heart, including the story behind it. It makes me cry at every viewing. CLH had never seen it, but he agreed it was awesome.

October

  • Pecker, 1998. Fun and sincere, in the John Waters way. Not his best, but not his worst either.
  • Six Feet Under, Season 4. I am working my way through the final episodes, since I never got the chance to finish the series. Half of this season is a refresher for me.

November

  • Oklahoma!, 1955. How can the men who wrote South Pacific, which was so wonderful, have also written this, which is so awful. Couldn’t even finish it. I’m a shame to my home state.
  • Six Feet Under, Season 5. Haaaaated it. In this season it seemed like, knowing the series was going to end, the writers took the characters into all kinds of directions that were untrue to their established personalities. I must be the only person in the world disappointed by the way this ended.

December

  • Mad Men, Season 3. I love every minute of this series, but I hate having to abstain form the internet in order to watch them fresh via Netflix, since I don’t have cable.
  • The Conversation, 1974. Interesting look at paranoia, and Gene Hackman is great, even if the symbolism is a little obvious.
