My Marquesan tattoo was chosen as a favorite in a slideshow by the heavily-tattooed music listings editor and art director at the Houston Press. My life’s work is now complete.

Read two short stories yesterday for my creative writing class. The first, “A & P” by John Updike*, was awesome and most excellent. I highly suggest you click that link and read it.
The second was “Stitches” by Antonya Nelson, who happens to teach creative writing at U of H. Here is some of my marginalia from that story:
- I hate this writing
- Electra. Or just weird
- Oedipal
- honesty?
- weird
- uhg.
- is that all it was?
- disgusting
- gross
- wtf is this?
- WTF?!
*The whole time I’m thinking, “This is the guy who wrote ‘The Jungle’?”

I don’t believe in total freedom for the artist. Left on his own, free to do anything he likes, the artist ends up doing nothing at all. If there’s one thing that’s dangerous for an artist, it’s precisely this question of total freedom, waiting for inspiration and all the rest of it. — Frederico Fellini (via kung fu grippe)

Today is the 50th anniversary of statehood in Hawaii.

It’s not the happiest of celebrations, but I’m going to mark the occasion with a pint of Kona Longboard and maybe some Spam sushi.
Aloha!

Comforter.
Like sweatshirt or hair brush, its name describes what it does. But unlike sweatshirt, its connotation is altogether pleasant.
I am currently going to sleep beneath a white one made of down.

What if all that you had to look forward to were the things that are free, like sunrises, wagging tails, holding hands, and your imagination. Would it all be worth it?
Probably.
What if you could trade-in some of your free stuff for fabulous wealth, fulfilling work, gorgeous looks, or anything else that your heart desired? Would it all be worth it?
Does a bear sleep in the woods? Is the Pope Catholic? Would you like syrup with your French Toast?
Not only are the best things in life free, but you can cash them in for stuff and still have lots left over!

I’m on my annual vacation to Florida, and it’s rained every day since we’ve been here. Next weekend, Hukilau weekend, should be nicer, and I’m looking forward to seeing friends old and new, including a few I’ve never met in real life before. I’m volunteering on Thursday at the Bahia Cabana check-in, so if you’re gonna be there stop by and see me.
I got another freelance gig. My first post at The Daily Fork is about all the weird food I ate while living in Korea. It includes the video of CLH eating live octopus.
