Transmission
| May 1, 2009 | Filled under Blog, Video |
Transmission is ceasing at Rule, Brittaniea! until after May 10, as we’ll be exploring the Communist/Bohemian capital of the Czech Republic.
Little Sister has been in Prague since the start of the year, studying art and sociology and cultures totally different from those you can find in Texas.
I’m usually the traveler, I’m usually the one mailing out letters, so it’s been a lot of fun for me to be on the receiving end while she visits Paris and London and other parts of Europe.
I can’t wait to see everything she has to show us. Pictures when we get back.
Roundup

I am always super lazy about going through my old photos after returning from vacation. What makes that harder is when I end up going out of town again a week later. I’ve been busy with running club campout planning, I lost my voice celebrating my birthday this weekend, and for some reason I allowed myself to be talked into another year of volunteerism for the afore-mentioned running club.
For some reason I keep expecting to get more out of my hard work that a smile and a pat on the back. Oh well. It’s fun, at least.
Prague was super cool, but I was not prepared for how small the city is. There were times toward the end of our week there where CLH and I were passing the same tourists on the street we’d seen days before. But the most awesome thing about the city is the architecture. The whole place is like an outdoor museum, and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I think Little Sister will miss it more than she realizes.
In other news, I’ve got a real job (again) and I was just given another really cool writing assignment which should keep me busy and happy. And here are three travel stories I’ve recently written for the Houston Press:
Marginalia

…is the general term for notes, scribbles, and editorial comments made in the margin of a book.
Holy cow? There is an actual term for this? The subject of whether or not “marking up” books is to defile them has been on my mind a lot lately. It’s always something I’ve been vehemently against (in addition to dogear-ing corners) but lately I’ve decided to give it a try, namely after consuming a whole book in a single sitting, something else I’ve never done before.
How do you feel about this? Do you write notes in your books? Or do you view it as vandalism (even in the books you own)? If you do, do you have a method? Code marks? What kinds of things do you mark or underline? Do you fold down the corners so you can find your notes later? Do your notes enhance or take away from the book on multiple readings?
I love love loved everything about this movie.

Times I have seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch live:
- 2002 in Oklahoma City — On a first date with someone who later devastated me.
- 2004 in Houston — At a poorly-attended production at Fitzgerald’s, with CLH, while we were dating.
- 2006 in Seoul — On New Year’s Eve eve, we stumbled upon the production on accident. It was best production I’ve seen and it was magical to hear the Koreans sing along to every single word.

The story for which I consumed mint honeywine is now live on the Houston Press website.
