First, you should go to Eyeshot and read this wonderful short story by my friend, Megan Tria Andrews.

I haven’t seen Megan in, what, six years, but she lives in San Diego and that is where I will be for the next five days. I hope I can see her. I have many friends and family in California but most of them are far away from San Diego.

I am going to San Diego to attend Tiki Oasis. I am going because I have thousands of frequent flier miles to use and friends to see and also I need to find some way to burn up the four weeks between right now and my reunion with my husband in Germany.

I’ve never been to San Diego, or that far in south in California before. I am planning to eat at taco trucks for every meal. The weather there is supposed to be 75 degrees every day. That astounds and confuses me. It’s been so hot in Houston for so long that I have no idea what 75 degrees feels like. I have no idea what to pack (and I’m supposed to be leaving in seven hours. I should be sleeping). Seventy-five degrees sounds awfully cold to me. Seventy-five degrees sounds like winter!

You will love it! Beautiful city! A little (OK, a lot) touristy, but it’s easy enough to look past all that. The fish tacos are great (and I don’t even like fish tacos all that much)… but expensive at some places. Hey, they take pride in their fish tacos.

    Have fun!!!

seriously, please contact me before eating any mexican food. i’m from there, i will steer you in the right direction. where are you going to be in sd? also are you going to be in sf? ::crosses fingers::

oh and if you want to go to the gayborhood tbu gets hit on mercilessly, go to hillcrest, it’s right next to downtown and way better. if you’re on university, you’re probably there. while you’re there eat at bread and cie. it’s delicious, as ms. a works there. it’s on university ave b/w 3rd and 4th. the hospital my mom works at is at the end of university and she eats there all the time, so you might get a double bonus millz sighting. she’s the lady in scrubs who looks exactly like me in 32 years.

ah, sandy eggo. yeah i’m going to stop now

    Milz-

Staying on Hotel Circle Drive. Have no car. Have to save San Fran for another time. But don’t worry, I will probably have enough FF miles in another three weeks to get there soon enough.

Haven’t eaten anything yet but hotel food. Will taxi to the university area tomorrow. Where is a cluster of good vintage stores? Wish you were here to show me around.

ooh, hillcrest has what you need, except mexican food.

university b/w 3rd and 5th ave and that whole neighborhood is rad. depending on which part of hotel circle you’re on you can even walk to hillcrest behind ucsd medical center. but you have to be up for it because there is one huge hill, hence hillcrest.

and if you want to see some museums balboa park is within walking distance and has the vast majority of sd’s most important museums as well as kind of just being an awesome place to hang out. you can take a picnic there and sit by the huge koi pond, or eat it in the arboretum or in the cactus garden, or by the fountain.

just tell the cabbie university and 5th and you’ll in hillcrest near thrift shops.

it’s probably better that you’re not coming soon because i take the gre on aug 30 and am kind of a stress case. afterwards though, it is game on.

wait you’re from texas you probably don’t want mexican food. but i think sd mexican food is different i will think of some good places around your area. but bread and cie would be a great place for lunch tomorrow. that whole area has a lot to choose from.

anyway, off to bed. did you wind up going to the whaley house today?
